about

Eric Biondo is an excellent improviser. Whether it be with his trumpet, the drum set, his voice or with his incredible sense of humor, he is always in tune with ways to connect and communicate ideas in the moment and relay them to the listener.
When we met in the fall of 1998 both in our early twenties, Eric was already a fully formed artist. We quickly became close friends and I loved any chance to hang out with him, make music, talk about life and laugh. An excellent and dedicated trumpet player from Buffalo, New York Eric also could play great drums. He wrote songs, studied music and played in lot’s of different bands. He always had a hunger for exploring new sounds and capturing and developing his ideas. A couple years after first meeting, I remember Eric giving me a cassette with a version he recorded of himself singing the great James Taylor song “That Lonesome Road”. The song is an a cappella piece written for solo voices. On the recording he gave me Eric sang all of the voices and harmonies. I’ll never forget it. Through the warbling dubbed cassette I heard my friend’s voice sing with an honesty, directness and a sweetness that pulled me in instantly.
In the two and a half decades since, in addition to collaborating with an array of artists and being based in Brooklyn, New York, Biondo has steadily built up a large catalogue of recorded music all his own.
With his latest project "QYR” Biondo leaves behind other instruments altogether and creates an album of original pieces using only his voice. A pure form of expression that is leading to greater works in the future, the process of writing and recording and composing “QYR” sound like an inspiring and therapeutic breakthrough. In his words: “After trying my normal ways of composing and running into a wall I had an epiphany to do what I do best which is to walk and hum. Melodies come easier in that moment, the immediacy of moving my body and humming... For a few days I set up a mic and improvised singing with my hands on the drums like walking hands. Being in the moment of song creation without the hinderance of an instrument. I recorded this way for a few hours and listened back to find episodes and segments of flow that were exciting to me. Then I would build vocals around that track reinforcing the idea. Eventually muting the original improv which would create the sensation of a conductor. I started this project after some life changes. I had a dream years ago that was informative to counterpoint and a feeling of true big scale composition. This record is something that will lead to deeper orchestrated ideas but needed to find the initiation of that process. I needed to make something not just from the head and crafty. More feeling less thought.”
The songs songs on QYR are beautiful moments that stand so well on their own and also lead me to look forward to larger more expansive works from my great friend Eric.
